Hi Alvin, Kit! Thanks for starting this. Here are our experiences with migration.
1) It is best to 'impose' FOSS to incoming employees. So if there is an opportunity to provide pre-employment training, then make it clear that they will use FOSS. This is like a pre-nuptial agreement. When they gt hired, then they know that they will use FOSS.
2) For those who are already hired, the first thing to do is get an inventory of skills and resources. Do they really need Windows and MS Office or can they do their work with Ubuntu and OpenOffice? 80 percent of the time, they are not power Excel users. For those who are power Excel users, I suggest buying Codeweaver (an extra USD50 over the Windows OS and MS Excel -- if they paid for it). So these power Excel suers cannot complain anymore, they got their Excel but they need to use Ubuntu otherwise.
3) Let people fill up a survey form as to what applications they use on their machines. In general, most of them will have browser-based applications. So in the next purchase, tell them the company doesn't want to buy proprietary systems but will still allow them to use their browser.
4) Make it a policy for the company to use Firefox-Mozilla. It's more secure and really beter than IE.
5) Don't migrate overnight, and don't migrate without a plan. Here is a sample plan:
a. shift mailserver to Linux
b. shift webserver to Linux
c. shift proxy to Linux
d. shift workstations browsers to Firefox
e. shift office suites to OpenOffice
f. shift OS to Linux
abc are just for the IT people (who have the capacity to absorb these changes), def are for end users.
